Switzerland best performance contniues under New Coach

Switzerland continued their impressive form under new manager Vladimir Petkovic after managing the second consecutive victory in the Euro 2016 qualifiers.

Switzerland had started the campaign with defeats against England in Slovenia. However, they appear to have recovered from these setbacks after managing to consecutive 4-0 wins over San Marino and Lithuania. Both these teams are considered as minnows and Switzerland were the overwhelming favourites to get three points. Many even expected the Swiss to score more than five past Lithuania. Midfielder Gelson Fernandes says that they were not able to score more since the opposition were extremely good and compact.

It took only 10 minutes for Switzerland to break the deadlock against San Marino, but it was a different story against the Lithuanians. After a goalless first half, Drmic scored in the 66th minute to finally break the deadlock.

Once the deadlock was broken, it was plain sailing for the Swiss. Bayern Munich winger Shaqiri asserted superiority in the match by scoring two goals within one coming in injury time. Fernandes accepted that it was not a convincing victory by any means, but he is happy that the team created several chances along the way. Switzerland play against Poland in a friendly match before concluding the last international break for 2014.

"We created chances in the first half and we didn't put them away. There was a little anxiety that started creeping in, because in recent matches we had had the same scenario. But after we opened the score, there was more space.

We scored more goals and I'm happy for the team and happy for our forwards who needed confidence. At half-time we had a talk and said to each other that we had to take our opportunities. That's what we did. I think people enjoyed watching the second half,” said Fernandes.
