Switzerland manager Vladimir Petkovic says that his team cannot just rely on scoring from set pieces if they are to beat France

Switzerland manager Vladimir Petkovic says that his team cannot just rely on scoring from set pieces if they are to beat France in the group stages.

The national team had a tough start to Euro 2016 after managing only a draw with Romania in the second game. This was seen as one of the winnable matches for Switzerland, but the 1-1 draw has severely hurt their chances of qualification. They started the tournament with a narrow 1-0 win over Albania. So far, the team has scored only two goals but both of them have come from set pieces.

France have done so far well in the tournament with two wins from their opening two matches. Qualification to the last 16 of the competition is likely to be met with only lukewarm response since France are expected to make a major impact at the tournament.

Even though they have moved on to the next round, manager Didier Deschamps is likely to field a strong line-up against Switzerland in the hope of not letting the good form slip away. Switzerland may also have the top spot, which still remains a distinct possibility if they managed to get a win against France. However, they will have to settle for the second spot if the game ends in a draw.

“I don’t think set pieces will be enough. There are other aspects of the game that will be important, too.We need to be well organised, compact, run a great deal, and have a lot of desire to play football,” said Petkovic.“Yes, they tend to score a lot from set pieces, so we can use this as a good test.

In the friendly games we had a few problems in that area, but we’ve got better,” said opposition goalkeeper Hugo Lloris when questioned about the threat from Switzerland in set pieces.
