Switzerland snatches a surprising victory over Portugal

During the 2016 edition of the UEFA Euro’s, Portugal made history as they won their first major international competition after claiming victories over: Croatia, Poland, Wales and France just to name a few of the national sides that Portugal had to overcome in order to be crowned as the champions of the tournament.

Portugal is one of the favorites of snatching a top spot of their group and to qualify for the upcoming 2018 FIFA World Cup but Switzerland has surprisingly defeated the Portuguese squad in their opening qualification match.

Portugal and Switzerland locked horns on September 6 at the Jakob-Park and goals from Embolo and Mehmedi was enough for Switzerland to come out on top with the victory.

The furthest rounds that the Switzerland national football team has ever reached in any FIFA World Cup were the quarter-finals and this was back in 1954. Ever since then, they have been consistently settling with either the round of 16 or of the group stages.

Defeating Portugal is a superb way for Switzerland to forget about their recent struggles and motivate them to continue pushing forward.

Group B consists of: Switzerland, Portugal, Andorra, Latvia, Hungary and Faroe Island. Portugal is the nation that is generally considered to be the favorite of snatching the top spot and qualify for the approaching FIFA 2018 World Cup but with this defeat, Switzerland is turning out to be a true contender for the 1rst position of that group.

Switzerland’s next qualification match is scheduled to take place on October 7 as they face off with Hungary and the head coach of the national side Vladimir Petković is hoping that his squad can continue snatching more victories and hopefully advance further than what the national side has been doing for the past 22 years.
